Default FWA Between The Ropes 2: Rocky Creed

Richie Carter: Welcome back to another edition of FWA between the ropes…when I was offered this space on FWA.com and the FWA magazine I wanted to make it a point to always open with a brief line about my guest before expanding on that and then jump into the interview. This week though in only my second ever interview I’m straying from that formula. You see my guest is a big one…a face that hasn’t been seen in the FWA for quite some time in fact. He was an impressive Television Champion, he was a part of the reborn Empire X, he held the FWA World Championship and feuded with the late Matt Boudreau. His Championship success wasn’t limited to the wrestling ring though as before he crossed over to the FWA he was a boxing Champion.

    You guessed who yet?

Final hint…he’s Australian…just don’t hold that against him (chuckling).

I am of course talking about Rocky Creed. The man Rocky Creed not the sudden ascent up the ranks that was since named after him. Everybody starts out at the bottom of the card but months into his career it seemed that was where Creed would stay. But overnight he seemed to drastically better himself and everybody took notice of him as he went from curtain jerker to star. He’s feuded with some of the biggest names in this industry, names like Darnell Porter, Bullseye Johnson, Chris Kennedy, Jack Severino, Gabrielle Ignito, Matt Boudreau and so on. He had and still has a legion of fans clamoring for his eventual return to the ring after being a victim of The Great Sieges takeover of Fight Night. That moment hasn’t come just yet, though it must be said he’s looking to be in top physical shape.

Now enough of that, before you all get sick of the sound of my voice I better introduce my guest to you all, the one, the only Rocky Creed.

Rocky Creed: Thanks for having me Richie, always nice to be back in the FWA world. We’re not referring to our company as FWA universe are we? (laughs)

Richie Carter: Oh no, god no. (chuckling) It really is a pleasure to have you here Rocky…even if you’re raising my caliber of guests even further from the lofty benchmark I already set in week one.

Rocky Creed: Well, sorry to unleash such a burden on you Richie (laughs)

Richie Carter: Now I guess my first question has to be; is the desire to compete still there for you?

Rocky Creed: It is always going to be there but for now I have other interests and mentally I just don’t want it at the moment. I know I can still compete at a very good level but I need more reasons than just competing to go out there and wrestle, I have been in matches who have shortened my career and put myself on the line for over three years without a hiatus and it’s just great to have had all of this time off. I actually requested time off after Back in Business V and the grueling final match of my series with Matt Boudreau but Matthew Robinson wouldn’t allow it because of Boudreau slowly fading and Fight Night needing to keep as many big stars as they could. I needed to be the biggest star of the brand and I can’t say I wasn’t ready for it because I was and I wanted it but mentally I was drained so it was a case of being at the right place at the wrong time. So for about 7 months I was wrestling but my heart wasn’t into as much due to being drained, I was still one of the best wrestlers in the FWA without being arrogant but I still felt that my performance was sloppy for my standards so after I lost the championship I knew it was time to take some time off.

Richie Carter: What about your life now; what’s keeping you busy now that you’re out of the ring?

Rocky Creed: Well my FWA performer’s contract expired a few months ago and I signed a FWA non-exclusive contract, basically I have freedom to do what I want but I also do FWA promotional work whenever I can. I do autograph signings, press conferences, do TV and movie work for FWA among other media work. Outside of FWA, I keep myself active and fit and I also like to attend sporting events particularly UFC and Boxing, I’ve been going to every major show. I was there for Marquez v Pacquiao and also UFC 139 with the fight of the year in Shogun v Henderson.

Richie Carter: Any regrets about your career, particularly the way it ended? You had just recently won the FWA World Championship and unfortunately lost it at Mile High not long after before Chris (Kennedy) put you on the sidelines.

Rocky Creed: Life is too short to have regrets, I have lived a great life and I have just turned 25 years old. I have been a world television champion and a FWA world champion and one of the biggest stars in the FWA in recent years. Like I said the FWA title came at the wrong time but that’s what happens, I can still proudly say I was a world champion and even if I wasn’t a great world champion, I deserved to be world champion unlike some…Faheem Fate comes to mind. And who says it has ended…

Richie Carter: Ahh good point. Am I right in assuming that Chris would be in your crosshairs if you ever return?

Rocky Creed: Definitely, I beat him in my final match and he was so arrogant because he got a victory over me when I was pretty much done. In his defense, he has been impressive since I have been away and has definitely improved leaps and bounds and deserves his success but if I return he better be willing to face me man to man and not attack me from behind like he did to injure me and put me on the shelf.

Richie Carter: Now changing subjects a bit; Empire X. I can imagine it would have been a great honor to be involved in that group…to this day the original group is still held in high regard. Did it feel like you were a part of something big going into that?

Rocky Creed: Empire X was great to be a part of but purely for the name; unfortunately the Empire X of 2008 was a huge disappointment. We were not a unit, we were more a ‘super group’, we had each other’s best interests in mind but we were all very independent. Moore, Sync, Jackson, Moira, Nemesis and I all had our own problems to deal with so it was never going to work unlike the original tag team. I just wanted to be a part of something big but it didn’t turn out that way, I should have kept to myself as an individual but overall it did not hurt me so you live and learn.

Richie Carter: It wasn’t all golden with that group though…it failed to live up to general expectations, can you pinpoint the reason why? A lot of people label James Sync as the single cause of all negativity.

Rocky Creed: Just as I said, we were all individuals with our own problems. James Sync wasn’t the single cause of the problem, he was a big problem but we could have survived without him if we wanted to but we didn’t want that. I had the world TV title in my eyes with world title aspirations and the others had similar goals so it was going to end but we had some good memories in and outside of the ring.

Richie Carter: I asked Cameron this last week and he obliged what about you any personal opinions about Sync you’d like to share?

Rocky Creed: Well when I first entered FWA, James Sync was one of these guys coming up the ranks and he had a lot of hype behind him and he won the X-Title and the World Tag Title and everyone thought he was the ‘next big thing’ but I don’t think Sync had the mental power to really fulfill his potential. Matthew Robinson, Drew Jolson and countless FWA superstars can criticize Sync but a lot of them believed he had the talent to do big things whether they deny it or not and they gave him the opportunities to really take FWA by storm but he never followed through, once he left the first time after 2008 he was never the same man. He had a good feud with me but to be honest if I wasn’t feuding with him, there would have been no other options and he would have quit earlier. I wouldn’t say I carried him completely but I certainly had to motivate him indirectly throughout the feud. Sync just didn’t have what it took to be a FWA superstar in the long haul; he was there for the good times which were mostly outside the ring. The parties, red carpets and exclusive events appealed to Sync a lot more in my opinion than the wrestling did but it is his loss.

Richie Carter: Do you still follow the FWA product at all?

Rocky Creed: I try to keep busy these days so I can’t always follow it but I make sure I keep up with the results at least, it’s good to see guys like Duke Drazin, Wolf and Thomas Princeton finally become world champions. They do deserve it after their hard work; they’ve been with FWA for years and for them to finally hold up the world title, I understand how great they feel when it all feels worth it…the blood, sweat and tears.

Richie Carter: What are your thoughts on the brand merge?

Rocky Creed: It was bound to happen, I hear internally FWA has been struggling as of late but on the bright side as a company I know they are still doing as well as ever. Matthew Robinson always wants new talent brought in so that Crossfire and Fight Night can continue to operate as separate entities but at the end of the day you would rather have 20 great wrestlers than 20 great wrestlers plus a lot of unreliable dead weight. And with the brand merge, this really makes the main event interesting with all the guys from Crossfire and Fight Night being part of the same show, I’m sure it will make for exciting TV.

Richie Carter: You and Gabrielle…and I are all from the same corner of the world, has there ever been a friendship there between you two? I know that our two nations love to give each other stick at every opportunity but there’s always a sense of camaraderie there.

Rocky Creed: Gabrielle and I get along great behind the scenes, we have a lot of respect for each other because we both perform to the best of our abilities in the squared circle and give 110% in every match unlike some of the past and present FWA wrestlers. We have had some good times because we have both been part of the FWA for a number of years now and she is one of the people I do like to talk to backstage, on a flight or anywhere the FWA takes us. We are not best friends by any means but we certainly don’t dislike each other but yeah we take shots at each other’s countries, it’s just in our blood.

Richie Carter: And on the subject of Gabrielle there’s been talk and suggestion that despite her claims Chris isn’t her baby’s father…are you? (chuckling)

    Rocky Creed: No comment...haha

Richie Carter: Smart answer. If you were too return to the FWA tomorrow who is the first person you would want to face? Who’s that somebody you either never got the chance to or enjoy facing the most?

Rocky Creed: Well I would love to face most of the guys on the roster at one point or another but I suppose the first person I’d love to face is the guy (or woman) holding the world title, even in a non-title match just to prove that I am still one of the best in the world and I still have my rematch clause, I made sure in my new contract with the FWA that the clause remains as long as I am an FWA employee. I know how to protect myself and I know how much I’m worth. I enjoyed facing a lot of people like Gabrielle, Duke Drazin, Darnell Porter, Ryan Hall, Wolf and of course Matt Boudreau but I wish I had the chance to go against the likes of Sean Kelleher, Daniel Sinclair, G-Rich and Jillian DeSilva. I know I would have had fantastic matches with those four individuals.

Richie Carter: Over the years Jack Severino has claimed credit for making you what you are now…just how wrong is he?

Rocky Creed: Very wrong in all honesty. Severino was there basically in the first year and a half of my career but if you look he was basically a stepping stone for me, the first match where I pulled everything out of my body to get that draw and prove to everyone that I deserved to be in the FWA, then I went on to defeat him at Payback 2008 and further prove that I was quickly rising up the ranks of the FWA. Of course the biggest match was the World Television Championship defense where a few thought that Severino was going to derail my momentum and take the title from me but I made sure that he left empty handed, Severino was a great opponent but him taking credit for my career is just ridiculous. I worked hard to get where I am and I didn’t do it all on my own, there were people who helped me but Jack Severino was not one of those people.

Richie Carter: Now if I can get a little personal here…it was reported towards the end of your FWA career that you were again dating model Krystal Forscutt…are you two still an item?

Rocky Creed: No, we’re not an item anymore. We couldn’t make things work; it was basically lifestyle commitments for both because there certainly weren’t any problems physically obviously. We wanted different things and both of us want different careers and one person couldn’t follow the other all over the world so we decided to break it off…as far as a relationship goes. We still ‘get together’ every so often.

Richie Carter: Out of all the FWA ladies past and present who would you snog, marry and avoid?

Rocky Creed: I would avoid Susie Sue, never ever understood that girl at all to be honest. I would snog pretty much all the divas but I guess number one on the list would be Gabrielle. As for who I would marry, I would have to choose Anyanka…I’m sure she would cause less problems than Gabrielle.

Richie Carter: She certainly seems like a handful, even her own wife can’t keep her in check. Sorry…the kids like questions like that. To get serious again…you feuded with Matt Boudreau in a best of five series, going 2 and 0 early on. It was a big feud, an amazing story to watch as you both became friends. My final question is would you have destroyed that friendship to get the World Championship sooner than you did?

Rocky Creed: Well we had a friendship a few months prior to the world title series, when I won the world television championship and he was the reigning FWA champion we had plans to become a unit with Aut Pax Aut Bellum and create a mega group to wreak havoc in the FWA but I don’t think the FWA really shared those same plans and I lost my world TV title to Darnell Porter but I guess that needed to happen to really plant the seeds for this feud with Matt Boudreau. As to the point of the question, I would have done anything to capture the world championship because you have to remember Boudreau would have done anything to keep it and I had to be one step ahead of him which I was up until it started to really matter. The FWA title became a lot more prestigious when Boudreau held it for an incredible length of time and to be the man to beat Matt Boudreau for the championship really would have put me up there, whilst I did beat him twice which is a big accomplishment in itself because how many people have beat Boudreau twice it didn’t matter because I couldn’t get that all important third victory.

Richie Carter: Well Rocky it has been an absolute honor to meet you and discuss your career and your life with you. I wish you all the best in whatever you do next.

Rocky Creed: Thanks for having me Richie, pleasure to talk on camera for the first time in a year.

Richie Carter: Once again this was Richie Carter, he was Rocky Creed…stay tuned for another edition next week where I hope to get a guest with a little more sensuality.

    Great interview though

"We’re fighting because Anderson doesn’t want to fight me. Anderson trained with Munoz, he got destroyed by Munoz, he doesn’t want to fight Mark. Ed Soares, Anderson’s manager, worked diligently behind the scenes to make Mark and I fight each other. So I don’t have a big problem fighting Mark. my resentment is that Anderson got his way.”
