FWA Between The Ropes 3: Chris Kennedy

Richie Carter: Golden Opportunity winner, Rookie Of The Year, The Great Sieges former Champion of the future now a future father and he hopes FWA World Champion.

(Now of course I promised you all a sensual guest for this week’s edition of BTR…but an opportunity to speak with one of the biggest stars of the FWA drew my attention, but don’t worry sensuality is on the way.)

He is of course ‘The Astonishing’ Chris Kennedy. A former ROH star and the son of the great Kerry Von Kennedy. He’s travelled the world to hone his craft, becoming the very best wrestler that he can be. Labelled an internet darling or an indie sensation upon signing with the FWA he’s gone on to quickly become a true global star. But life hasn’t always been easy for Chris, he lost his mother and his father…as much as we may admire his ring work wasn’t there for his family. It is almost sad that history seems to be repeating itself in that regard…as without doubt the biggest thing in Chris’s life was Gabrielle. Those two had a torrid romance, inseparable once their eyes fell upon one another, but Chris turned his back on the woman who was unknowingly carrying his child. Now he looks at his growing family from the outside.

But we’ll get to that later because Chris is a very successful wrestler in his own right, few have ever had the start to a career that he has, one that has many predicting he will outshine his father. He’s taken out the likes of Rocky Creed and Bullseye Johnson, putting them on the shelf and rising up the ladder himself. He was a part of The Great Siege, the future star they seemed to be building. He won the 2011 Golden Opportunity and when he cashed it in he came closer than anybody before him to reaping the rewards of that briefcase. From the moment Chris first appeared on FWA TV and told the world he’d be bigger than Boudreau to this moment now he’s made people talk about him. The swagger, the romance, the betrayal, the glory, The Astonishing Chris Kennedy.

And now that he’s suitably introduced let me now welcome him to the BTR studio. Welcome Chris Kennedy; it’s an honour to meet a Kennedy.

Chris Kennedy: The pleasure is all mine Richie. I'm very glad to be here.

Richie Carter: Let me start by simply stating something, just to get it out of the way. I’m not a fan of yours Chris at least personally. I respect what you can do in the ring, few can match your skill in that regard…but it seems like your father there’s been some questionable choices. It’s common in this industry to put yourself first…but you…are you proud of what you did at Red, White And Bruised?

Chris Kennedy: You know Richie I am glad you addressed this first because this is something I am trying to put behind me but also something that needs to be addressed for obvious reasons. What I did to Gabrielle at Red, White and Bruised is something I regret each and every day, and something I wish I could change. It happened at a time in my life where I was heavily medicated, on all types of drugs. If it couldn't be detected by the FWA's wellness policy, then I was on it. Mostly pain killers and anti-depressants. I also had a fondness for alcohol and the two don't mix. I'm off the medication and everything seems different to me, as if a cloud has been lifted from my head. Right now I am on a quest for atonement and I know that I cannot earn my redemption by simply saying "I'm sorry". Actions speak louder than words, everyone is witnessing the new me.

Richie Carter: Well that’s very honourable and I’ll leave that at that and move this interview along. The FWA is of course not where you made your start having competed all over the world. What has been your favourite promotion to compete for?

Chris Kennedy: I had a lot of good times in Ring Of Honor. I'm good friends with Samoa Joe and Colt Cabana, and we had some good times together, But I found mainstream success in FWA and met a lot of friends their so I would have to say FWA, although I feel that the quality of the promotion has fallen drastically. That's why I chose to stick around. I love the FWA and I want to make it better.

Richie Carter: What about where it all started; are you a wrestler simply because your father is or was there some personal motivation?

Chris Kennedy: When I was 5 years old I used to watch my father wrestle every Saturday night, it was my own way of being close to him. He was gone all the time, so I would watch his matches and feel like I was right there with him. He got me started on it, but it was when I was 12 years old, watching Raven and Tommy Dreamer tear it up in ECW that made me want to get into the business. I attended every ECW TV event I could while I lived with my aunt in Philadelphia in the 90's after my mom died and I left Florida. I was there in the old ECW arena when Raven fought Terry Funk. I think that even if my father was just your average Joe, I'd still be here doing what I do because I am a competitor by nature, and I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

Richie Carter: We’ve all heard that your contract was up recently…just how close were you too leaving the FWA?

Chris Kennedy: I had received an offer from Vince and I just may have taken it but he was dead set on changing my name to Kennedy Christiano. TNA made an offer, but c'mon now. It was Kevin Kelly in ROH who almost had me. But I realized that if I turned my back on the FWA, I'd be doing the same thing that those I criticize have been doing.

Richie Carter: Kennedy Christiano…you made the right choice. Was The Great Siege simply a stepping stone for you from the beginning or was your relationship with Gabrielle the downfall of that partnership?

Chris Kennedy: My best friend in The Great Siege has always been Zaire Wyoming. When Julian Night viciously attacked him, where were The Great Siege? I expected the Great Siege to be behind me in avenging our brother Zaire, but APAB didn't care and my Gabrielle even started sleeping with him behind my back. No one cared about Zaire, the only one who did anything was Joey (Bones). He kicked Julian’s ass and he hasn't been seen since. The Great Siege say they have each other’s back but each individual member only looks out for themselves. When I attacked Gabrielle at Red, White and Bruised where was APAB? They were in their locker room, watching her get beat down while they cried like babies mourning the loss of their tag team titles. No one thinks of these things when they peg me the bad guy. I left The Great Siege because I was over their bullshit, and I still have a score to settle with them, well most of them. Gabrielle, she isn't a target. But APAB is and so is Zaire if he chooses to ignore everything I have done with him and side with a couple of guys who let him get hospitalized.

Richie Carter: I will commend you on something…despite having a fortune given to you by your mother you still worked hard to get to where you are. Many would have simply bought their way into the FWA or used their fathers name. So did you ever feel like you had to work harder to avoid people crediting your success to your bank account?

Chris Kennedy: By the time I was training to be wrestler, I hadn't talked to my father in 6 years so when people say I am only in professional wrestling because my daddy got me in, I laugh at their ignorance. Of course people talk, when I wrestled in Japan, I couldn't understand what anyone said, but when they talked to me or about me I always heard "Kerry Kennedy" in the midst of their gibberish. I didn't want people associating me with my father. So yeah, it was hard at first breaking out of his shadow, but I like to think that I am leagues above my father both in the ring and on the mic. Now, the kids who go to FWA shows weren't around in the 80's and have not even seen my dad wrestle.

Richie Carter: I spoke with Rocky Creed last week…do you keep one eye over your shoulder for the eventual day that he’ll return?

Chris Kennedy: I have made so many enemies, it seems as if I am always watching my back. I know that one day Rocky will be back and when he does, I will be more than glad to face him for the 3rd time.

Richie Carter: Who has the more devoted worshippers; Gabrielle or Duke Drazin?

Chris Kennedy: Gabrielle has followers. Duke Drazin has 7 fans and they are all the kids he plays Dungeons and Dragons with every Thursday nights.

Richie Carter: (laughter) Now the big subject…Gabrielle she recently revealed you’re going to be a father, honestly were you happy to hear that?

Chris Kennedy: I was confused as to how I felt, honestly. With all that was going on, I didn't know what to feel. But in truth I love children and always wanted a son, a little me, someone that looked up to me the same way I looked up to my dad, the only difference being that I would be there for my son.

Richie Carter: And this new found attitude, the fans are cheering for you…is this all about wanting to be able to be a father to your son or daughter?

Chris Kennedy: That's part of it, but it's also about me wanting to change the FWA for the better. You have APAB running around trying to keep The Great Siege going after its practically dead, barely even a stable anymore. Duke Drazin and Anthony finally broke APABS title reign and immediately emulated all of APABs wrong doings, going months without defending the tag title just like APAB. Duke Drazin is a fabricated paper champion who's reign is about to end. I am the voice of the FWA and I have the people’s best interest at heart. They are behind me because they want change as much as I do, and I am the man who will give it to them,

Richie Carter: What about Gabrielle herself…

Chris Kennedy: I get the feeling this is becoming a Gabrielle interview, every other question is about her, Richie. Look, I'm trying to move past this. I did a horrible thing when I was in a dark place of my life.

Richie Carter: I’m sorry Chris…they’re just the questions people want asked. Now allot of people seem to want to see it, you two were this amazingly passionate couple and Gabby is renowned for having a big heart. But with Jenny, Cameron, Anthony, Maddie among others all in the mix and Sara on your arm do you ever see yourself getting back together with Gabby and raising your child together?

Chris Kennedy:: I can't answer that question. In a perfect world, Gabrielle would be wearing my ring on her finger and we would leave the FWA to raise our child in the house my mother raised me in. But in the real world, she is already married and lives a million different lives. I really don't want to talk about this subject anymore Richie, I hope you'll understand.

Richie Carter: Sure thing Chris, I’m not trying to make you feel uneasy here. So let’s move onto a lighter subject: just some word association, I’ll throw out a name and just reply with the first word that pops into your head: Duke Drazin?

Richie Carter: Very nicely done. Now recently you gave up our fortune to support your unborn child…what now? How is life without that money? And was it worth it?

Chris Kennedy: I make more money than I need just by main eventing Fight Night every week. I'll be okay. It was all worth it? Of course. This wasn't my money, it was my mothers. Now it's my child’s. Simple as that. I'm going to be just fine, Richie.

Richie Carter: And finally you have a shot at the FWA Championship at Trial By Fire. Is that the ultimate goal? And is there anything else you’d love to accomplish?

Chris Kennedy: As far as my career goes, my ultimate goal is to be one of the greatest FWA Champions of all time. My dream is win the win the FWA championship and then The World Heavyweight championship. I want to be the guy who unifies the titles, the last FWA Champion, the last World Heavyweight Champion, the first ever Undisputed champion. And I'm going to do it.

Richie Carter: Well best of luck with that Chris. I must admit I was nervous about doing this…but it has been a pleasure to meet you Chris. Not the man that I had pictured…no offence intended.

Chris Kennedy: Well thanks Richie, I'm happy I could rise above your expectations. Thanks for having me.
