Default PWS'S European Football scores and Results Thread

JONAS GUTIERREZ proved Newcastle can score without Demba Ba as his injury-time winner completed a Toon turnaround.

The home side dominated proceedings but faced an uphill battle after David Goodwillie gave Blackburn the lead after 35 minutes.

Alan Pardew's men had to be patient but they got their rewards when Hatem Ben Arfa produced a stunning piece of individual skill to level things up with 20 minutes to go.

The game looked set to go to a replay before Argentine Gutierrez scored another fabulous solo goal to send Newcastle through to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

With hotshot Ba and Cheik Tiote heading off to the African Cup of Nations, Pardew opted for Leon Best and Ben Arfa in attack, while rookie Mehdi Abeid lined up in midfield.

Keeper Mark Bunn was called upon for the first time with barely a minute on the clock when Best tested him from a tight angle.

Ben Arfa floated a corner across the six-yard box and when the ball was eventually played out to central defender Mike Williamson, he curled a right-foot shot just over.

Newcastle were dominating with Ben Arfa looking like he had a point to prove up front.

Cabaye should perhaps have put them ahead four minutes later when he and Best staged a pacey break-out, although the Frenchman sliced his shot well off target.

Rovers eventually started to force their way into the game as the initial flurry abated, and keeper Tim Krul had to make a solid save at his near post after Rochina burst into space on the left with 20 minutes gone.

The blossoming partnership between winger Gutierrez and full-back Davide Santon down the left was proving Newcastle's most effective line of attack, and the pair combined to good effect once again to find Best with his back to goal.

Best laid the ball off to Ben Arfa, whose drilled effort was well blocked by central defender Grant Hanley.

But it was Blackburn who took the lead with 10 minutes of the half remaining.

Hanley was allowed to meet Morten Gamst Pedersen's cross with a downward header which Krul managed to parry, but Goodwillie bundled home from close range.

The setback had affected the home side as they became increasingly careless in possession.

They went close when Abeid's 42nd-minute cross clipped Radosav Petrovic and looped towards the far post, but dropped just wide.

Blackburn were not content to try to sit on their lead and it took a good block by Abeid just after half-time to deny Goodwillie another chance to test Krul.

The Dutch keeper had to make a smart save to keep out Vukcevic's well-struck effort seconds later, but substitute Shola Ameobi passed up a glorious opportunity to level as play switched rapidly to the other end.

Cabaye pounced on Henley's poor pass to play the striker into space inside the penalty area, but although he steadied himself, he lifted his left-foot shot high and wide of the target.

Newcastle finally had their equaliser as Ben Arfa produced an early contender for goal of the season.

The mercurial Frenchman picked up the ball, dazzled three players before firing sublimely into the net to send St James' Park wild.

Williamson headed against the bar from Taylor's 78th-minute corner and then saw Bunn pull off a fine reaction save to keep out his flicked header seven minutes from time, and Ameobi fired inches wide in the final minute of normal time.

But in the fifth minute of injury time, Gutierrez exchanged passes with Best inside the box and lifted a shot over Bunn to snatch victory at the death.

NEWCASTLE: Krul, Simpson (Ryan Taylor 60), Coloccini, Williamson, Santon, Obertan (Shola Ameobi 56), Abeid (Gosling 87), Cabaye, Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, Best. Subs Not Used: Elliot, Perch,Sammy Ameobi, Vuckic. Booked: Williamson.

Default FA Cup: Swindon 2 Wigan 1

PAOLO DI CANIO served up another slice of FA Cup magic as his Swindon side shocked Wigan.

The Robins boss famously hit the winner to knock out Manchester United at Old Trafford back in 2001.

And Di Canio masterminded an amazing County Ground reversal as supersub Paul Benson grabbed the winner.

Latics rookie Callum McManaman had put the visitors ahead, prodding home after Ben Watson's penalty hit the post.

But Alan Connell levelled matters before Benson fired home a 76th-minute winner.

The hosts should have taken the lead after just 12 minutes when Raffaele De Vita snatched Adrian Lopez's loose pass.

Instead, the on-loan striker let Wigan off the hook by firing straight at Ali Al Habsi.

The Latics keeper was in the thick of it again soon after — breathing a sigh of relief as Paul Caddis' deflected cross crept wide.

Callum Kennedy and Franco Di Santo then traded long-rangers before Jonathan Smith came close from 20 yards.

But it was the Premier League side who broke the deadlock — even though Ben Watson missed from the spot.

On 34 minutes, Aden Flint hacked down McManaman in the box — only for Watson to blast his penalty against the post.

But McManaman was first to the ball and slipped his shot under Robins keeper Wes Foderingham.

The lead lasted just six minutes though, with Connell glancing home Matt Ritchie's dead-eye cross to level.

There was still time for more drama before the break, and Wigan ace Shaun Maloney had a goal disallowed for offside.

Swindon settled in after the interval and Connell poked Kennedy's cross just wide.

The striker was shouting for a penalty when Gary Caldwell bundled him over — but ref Peter Walton was having none of it.

The Robins could sense blood now and Ritchie wasted a glorious chance to grab the lead on the hour.

Connell, Jonathan Smith and Benson combined to pick out the former Pompey man eight yards out. But the striker flashed his effort high and wide when he should have scored.

Swindon were on top and the first sniff Wigan had was when McManaman hit a deflected shot straight at Foderingham.

And Di Canio's men finished the job in style as Benson crashed home past Al Habsi from outside the box.

SWINDON: Foderingham, Caddis, Flint, McCormack, Kennedy, Ritchie, Ferry, Jonathan Smith, De Vita (Cibocchi 87), Connell (Magera 66), Murray (Benson 46). Subs Not Used: Phil Smith, Devera,Gabilondo, Louis Thompson.

    Goals: Connell 40,Benson 76.

WIGAN: Al Habsi, Boyce, Caldwell, Lopez, Mustoe, Maloney (Moses 77), Thomas (Gomez 56),McArthur, Watson, McManaman (Sammon 90), Di Santo. Subs Not Used: Pollitt,Gohouri,Dicko,Red mond. Booked: Thomas,Al Habsi,Watson.

    Goals: McManaman 35.

    Default Macclesfield 2 Bolton 2

DAVID WHEATER'S late header denied League Two Macclesfield a famous FA Cup scalp in a pulsating game at Moss Road.

Ivan Klasnic put the Premier League side in front after just seven minutes but Colin Daniel pulled the home side level nine minutes later.

Macclesfield have never reached the FA Cup fourth round but they were beginning to dream after 68 minutes when Arnaud Mendy put them ahead with a stunning 25-yard volley.

However, their lead stood for only 11 minutes as Wheater headed in Martin Petrov's free-kick.

And then Macclesfield keeper Jose Veiga produced a stunning last-ditch save from Klasnic to earn the Silkmen a thoroughly deserved replay at the Reebok Stadium.

It was a stirring display from the underdogs in a tie which was played against the first anniversary of the death of their popular midfielder Richard Butcher, who died at the age of 29 from a rare heart condition.

Silkmen manager Gary Simpson, as he does for every match, wore the number 21 in memory of Butcher, as well as yellow socks in honour of Keith Alexander, who died in 2010 aged 53 when Simpson was his assistant.

Bolton made six changes from the side that triumphed at Everton in midweek, with Kevin Davies coming in to captain the side and Chelsea target Gary Cahill not in the squad.

And despite a bright start from Macclesfield it was the Premier League side who took an early lead.

The Silkmen's keeper Jose Veiga did well to turn aside Chris Eagles'strike but from the following corner, Klasnic pounced from close range after the home side failed to clear.

Macclesfield could easily have folded after such a disheartening start but instead the League Two side took the game to the visitors.

Daniel could have had an immediate reply when he went through one-on-one with Bogdan but the Bolton keeper came out well to deny him.

Bogdan then produced more heroics to keep out Arnaud Mendy's sharp 20-yard strike.

But the pressure finally told in the 15th minute when Donnelly burst down the left, found Daniel unmarked at the far side of the area and he kept his cool before burying a fierce low shot past Bogdan to cue major celebrations in the Moss Rose stadium.

Bolton full-back Joe Riley skimmed the top of the bar with a cross-cum-shot from deep on the right, but Macclesfield continued to enjoy the bulk of possession and tested the visitors with an almost continuous barrage of long throws and corners up to half time.

The Silkmen continued to match Bolton in the second half and Carl Tremarco's excellent cross from the left reached Daniel but his header lacked the power to trouble Bogdan.

Bolton were then grateful to Wheater for a last-ditch tackle to deny Sam Wedgbury as he ran onto Hamshaw's through ball.

And then the impressive Daniel had a great chance to put Macclesfield in the lead after stepping inside Riley, but he fired straight at Bogan with the goal at his mercy.

Riley prevented an almost certain goal with a tremendous block of Donnelly's shot from eight yards, and although Tremarco had another effort on goal from the ensuing corner it was straightforward for Bogdan.

In the 68th minute however, the game swung towards Macclesfield, and in spectacular style.

Wheater's attempted headed clearance failed to make any distance and, from 25 yards out Mendy flicked the ball up before producing a beautiful volley into the top corner.

The 21-year-old French-born Guinea-Bissau midfielder turned away in restrained celebration while his team-mates and most of the 5,757 inside the stadium went crazy.

But dreams of a famous victory proved short-lived however as Wheater headed Bolton back level 13 minutes from time.

Petrov's free-kick from the left was expertly delivered and Wheater held off his marker to head down and past a flat-footed Veiga.

Macclesfield's endeavours looked to have tired them out, and Eagles looked for a winner with a curling effort from the edge of the box but it was too high.

Petrov then struck the angle from a direct free-kick before Veiga's stunning block denied Klasnic in the last minute — and that was only fair on Macclesfield who at least deserved the benefits of a replay.

MACCLESFIELD: Veiga, Bateson, Brisley, Brown, Tremarco, Hamshaw (Hewitt 78), Wedgbury, Mendy, Diagne, Daniel, Donnelly. Subs Not Used: Collis, Morgan, Mukendi, Fairhurst, Fisher, Whiteoak.

    Goals: Daniel 16, Mendy 68.

BOLTON: Bogdan, Riley, Wheater, Knight, Robinson, Eagles, Reo-Coker, Pratley (Mark Davies 63), Petrov, Klasnic, Kevin Davies (Ngog 63). Subs Not Used: Lynch, Sanli, Blake, Boyata, O'Halloran. Booked: Wheater, Robinson.

    Goals: Klasnic 7, Wheater 77.

Default FA Cup: Tottenham 3 Cheltenham 0

TOTTENHAM'S forwards gave Harry Redknapp a lift as they swept past Cheltenham.

Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Giovani Dos Santos all found the net in this FA Cup stroll.

Defoe got the ball rolling early doors before Pavlyuchenko doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.

And even Dos Santos — with just two Spurs goals to his name before today — got in on the act in the final minutes of the tie.

Michael Dawson handed Redknapp a further boost by making his first appearance since August.

Cheltenham are a full 67 places below Spurs — but started confidently, with Kaid Mohamed testing Carlo Cudicini.

At the other end, Dos Santos saw his weak pull-back cut out with Pavlyuchenko lurking in the box.

The Russian was in the mix again shortly after when he slalomed through Swindon only to curl over the bar.

Tottenham were starting to find their groove and Steven Pienaar came close.

So it was no surprise that Defoe broke the deadlock to dash the 5,000-strong travelling army.

Dos Santos streaked clear on the left, picked the ball up off Nico Kranjcar and centred for Defoe to prod home.

The ball was going in when the striker stabbed in from a yard.

And that robbed Dos Santos of only his third goal since joining Spurs — FIVE years ago!

Defoe had a sniff of goal soon after but skipper Alan Bennett came to the Robins' rescue with a key block.

The League Two side could not hold out for much longer though, and Spurs doubled their lead just before the break.

Dos Santos played in Defoe, who squared for Pavlyuchenko. And he tapped home with keeper Scott Brown stranded.

Defoe was in pole position to grab a second after the break, but hit his shot straight at Brown.

Jake Livermore, at right-back for Spurs, saw his shot trickle wide before racing back to his own box and snuffing out a rare Cheltenham attack.

Dos Santos and Defoe both blew chances before Russell Penn slipped in at the back post — only to miss from yards out.

Spurs were soon back on the attack, although Pavlyuchenko saw his shot tipped wide after skipping past two defenders.

And just as it looked like time was running out for a third, Dos Santos picked up Danny Rose's cross and brilliantly lobbed Brown.

TOTTENHAM: Cudicini, Bassong, Livermore, Dawson (Carroll 88), Rose, Lennon (Bostock 82),Pienaar, Kranjcar, Giovani, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe (Falque 76). Subs Not Used: Gomes, Kaboul, Van der Vaart, Parrett. Booked: Dawson.

    Goals: Defoe 24,Pavlyuchenko 43,Giovani 87.

Default FA Cup: Fulham 4 Charlton 0

CLINT DEMPSEY'S treble led Fulham's flattering victory against the League One leaders.

Sub Damien Duff's late strike completed a misleading FA Cup third-round scoreline in front of 7,000 travelling Charlton fans.

Dempsey gave the Cottagers an eighth minute lead after connecting with a deflected through ball from former Charlton midfielder Danny Murphy to flick home.

Boosted by up to 7,000 visiting fans, Charlton attacked with intent and only fine goalkeeping from David Stockdale prevented them netting an equaliser.

Yann Kermorgant, Danny Green and Bradley Wright-Phillips were all denied by the England man, before Dempsey netted in the 61st minute.

The 28-year-old secured progression to the fourth round with nine minutes remaining, converting from the penalty spot before Duff scored a deflected effort.

Fulham benefited from a strong line-up at Craven Cottage as manager Martin Jol stuck by his word not to name a weakened side, with Kerim Frei the only change to the side that defeated Arsenal on Monday.

Counterpart Chris Powell kept largely the same side that defeated Brentford earlier this week, with John Sullivan and Matthew Taylor drafted in.

The Addicks started brightest by the Thames and only a late block prevented Danny Hollands' header breaking the deadlock inside four minutes.

Fulham were under a lot of pressure during the opening exchanges but soon benefited from their attack-minded philosophy.

Moussa Dembele forced Sullivan into a superb one-handed save in the sixth minute and the Cottagers took the lead two minutes later.

Murphy, who was receiving a lot of stick from the travelling support, saw a through ball deflected into the path of Dempsey, who flicked home.

The goal did not dampen Fulham's enthusiasm as they continued to press forward, with Frei and John Arne Riise looking particularly dangerous down the left flank.

The latter saw a 20-yard effort blocked by Taylor, before Charlton pressed forward in search of an equaliser.

After some neat interplay Kermorgant hit a neat curled chip that forced Stockdale to parry wide, although Johnnie Jackson could only fire the rebound into the side-netting.

Charlton were looking increasingly dangerous as the half progressed and a stinging Wright-Phillips drive forced Stockdale to save with his feet.

Green was unfortunate to not see anybody convert a superb cutback as the visitors continued to press, before receiving the afternoon's first booking for clipping the heels of the ever-dangerous Frei.

Riise and Dempsey flashed shots wide as half-time approached, before Bobby Zamora saw a weak header saved by Sullivan.

The second period burst into life after a slow opening in the 54th minute when Sullivan tipped wide a 20-yard Murphy effort.

Dempsey headed over from the resulting corner, before Stockdale twice thwarted Charlton in quick succession at the other end.

The England man produced a superb reaction save to deny Wright-Phillips from close range, before tipping over Green's follow-up from outside the box.

Jol soon brought on Duff for Frei in a bid to change things and only a low Sullivan save stopped the Republic of Ireland international having an immediate impact.

The home side did not have to wait long for a second goal, though, as Dempsey netted his in the 61st minute.

The Texan midfielder played a one-two with Costa Rica international Bryan Ruiz, before directing the ball past Sullivan.

Charlton seemed to go into their shell after Dempsey's goal, with Ruiz, Zamora and Philippe Senderos all coming close in the 10 minutes that followed.

Wright-Phillips and Kermorgant saw efforts blocked as Charlton briefly threatened a revival, before the home side put the tie out of reach.

Ruiz was brought down in the box by the onrushing Sullivan, allowing Dempsey to tuck away the resulting penalty and claim the match ball.

The majority of the 20,317 fans inside Craven Cottage had another goal to celebrate with three minutes remaining as Duff saw an effort deflect in off Taylor.

FULHAM: Stockdale, Kelly, Senderos, Hangeland, John Arne Riise, Murphy (Sidwell 81), Frei (Duff 59), Dempsey, Dembele (Kasami 85), Ruiz, Zamora. Subs Not Used: Etheridge, Orlando Sa, Gecov, Hughes.

    Goals: Dempsey 8, 61, 81 pen, Duff 87.

CHARLTON: Sullivan, Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins (Evina 72), Green (Wagstaff 72), Pritchard, Hollands (Hughes 85), Jackson, Wright-Phillips, Kermorgant. Subs Not Used: Pope, Hayes, Euell, Cort. Booked: Green.

Default FA Cup: Everton 2 Tamworth 0

TAMWORTH'S giant-killing ambitions suffered a major setback just five minutes in.

Johnny Heitinga nodded the Toffees ahead but it was far from plain sailing for David Moyes' side against the battling non-league outfit.

All comeback hopes were finally crushed by an emphatically dispatched Leighton Baines' penalty with 10 minutes left

In an emotional start to proceedings, former Everton defender Gary Ablett, an FA Cup winner with the Toffees in 1995, was remembered with a minute's applause before kick-of.

The 46-year-old died of cancer on New Year's Day and members of his family and former team-mates joined the two teams on the pitch.

Ninety four places separate the sides across five divisions but Tamworth also reached the third round of the Cup in 2006 and 2007.

The underdogs found themselves behind after 20-year-old keeper Joe Collister missed Landon Donovan's corner and defender Heitinga headed in at the back post - via a deflection off Tamworth captain Duane Courtney.

The Premier League side were well on top and Collister did well to block a shot on the turn from Victor Anichebe before Diniyar Bilyaletdinov blazed over the bar from 15 yards out.

McFadden also had two decent chances to net his first goal since August 2010, first heading wide and then guiding a shot just past the post.

An estimated 5,000 fans had travelled up from the Midlands and they almost had a goal to cheer in the 29th minute when striker Kyle Patterson set off on a run from the half-way line to the edge of the area but fired just past the far post.

Patterson, a former team-mate of Donovan and David Beckham at Los Angeles Galaxy, then shot straight at Tim Howard as the home fans began to get frustrated.

Moyes was forced into a change 12 minutes into the second half when Seamus Coleman limped off to be replaced by Baines.

Keiron St Aimie came on for Tamworth and his first contribution was a well-struck volley wide of Howard's post.

At the other end, Donovan guided Baines' cross just wide before McFadden was replaced by Royston Drenthe.

Drenthe helped seal the win 10 minutes from time. He was fouled by Samuel Habergham and Baines smashed in the penalty.

Donovan went within inches of making it 3-0 with a superb right-footed shot from 25 yards that beat Collister but crashed off the angle of post and bar.

EVERTON: Howard, Coleman (Baines 57), Heitinga, Distin, Neville, Donovan, Fellaini, Bilyaletdinov, Gueye, McFadden (Drenthe 65), Anichebe (Stracqualursi 73). Subs Not Used: Hahnemann, Vellios, Duffy, McAleny.

Goals: Heitinga 5, Baines 79 pen.

TAMWORTH: Collister, Tait, Francis, Kanyuka, Habergham, McKoy, Courtney (McDonald 80), Barrow, Thomas (Shariff 67), Patterson, Christie (St Aimie 62). Subs Not Used: Hedge, Oji, Taylor, Wallen. Booked: Collister.

Default FA Cup: West Brom 4 Cardiff 2

HAT-TRICK hero Simon Cox hit his first goals since August as West Brom saw off a resilient Cardiff.

Peter Odemwingie opened the scoring with just seven minutes on the clock before Cox notched his first to double the Baggies' lead.

But the Bluebirds hit back through Rob Earnshaw and Joe Mason to level things up shortly after half-time.

Cox's superb long-range effort put Roy Hodgson's side back in front before the Irishman completed his treble with seconds to go.

Cardiff striker Rudi Gestede gave the sparse home crowd a scare in the first 32 second, firing a 20-yard drive just over the bar.

Referee Lee Probert turned down a strong handball appeal from the Baggies soon after, but Cardiff's reprieve was shortlived as Albion grabbed a seventh-minute lead.

It was lucky, though, as Craig Dawson booted a clearance into the path of Odemwingie, who fired a low 15-yard drive beyond goalkeeper Tom Heaton for his fifth goal of the season.

The visitors then dominated possession, but failed to trouble Foster any further.

With the game flatlining, it needed a spark, and it came though the home side's second goal in the 33rd minute from Cox.

It was a surging run from Cox that resulted in a foul from Dekel Keinan, the defender this week recalled from a loan spell with Carling Cup semi-final opponents Palace.

From the free kick, again there was a touch of good fortune for the home side as Probert ordered a re-take and booked captain Nicky Shorey for not playing to the whistle.

Shorey's initial effort had gone out of play, but at the second time of asking he delivered a precision ball into the heart of the area for Cox to head home from eight yards - his first goal since August 23.

Three minutes later, though, a mistake by Shorey allowed City a lifeline as Filip Kiss supplied a simple ball into the six-yard box for former Albion striker Robert Earnshaw to tap beyond Foster.

Within a minute it then required a fine blocking save from Heaton to beat away a fierce 18-yard left-foot drive from Craig Dorrans to deny Albion regaining their two-goal cushion.

Cardiff hauled themselves level five minutes into the second half, with substitute Mason making it six goals in his last 13 games.

Mason, who had replaced the injured Gestede in the 42nd minute, turned superbly inside the area on to a low ball from Earnshaw before beating Foster with an angled shot in off his right-hand post.

Albion had another chance soon after, but from 20 yards Shorey's rising drive clipped the crossbar.

On the hour Hodgson then made a double substitution, replacing Jara Reyes and George Thorne with Somen Tchoyi and Marc-Antoine Fortune.

Within a minute Albion edged back in front, with Cox unleashing a rasping 25-yard drive that gave Heaton no chance as it crossed the line after striking his right-hand upright.

And Cox picked up the match ball as he guided home Odemwingie's cross from close range in the 90th minute.
